As we return to school today, every school across the nation is considering their level of preparedness for the unthinkable, and Salt Creek is no different. Here are the steps we are taking this week to address the Sandy Hook Elementary incident and review our own safety procedures.
We will have a brief staff meeting this morning to discuss what is appropriate/inappropriate for class discussions based on this document from the National Association of School Psychologists.
This is also a great resource for parents to use as a guide for talking to your children. Rest assured that there will be NO whole class discussions on the details of the incident in Connecticut. Rather, teachers will be cognizant of individual students who may have strong emotional reactions or questions that need individual attention.
Furthermore, our focus will be on preparation. We have a lock-down drill scheduled for 11:00 am Tuesday and we will practice the very procedures that saved lives in Connecticut last week. We have a very strong and thoughtful Safe School Committee and new parents are always welcome to join us for our monthly meetings. Please contact Ms. Natalie Martinez (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you would like to attend the next meeting.
If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 397-5494 or email (email@example.com).
